Steel coils weighing 26 mt on the weather deck - success!

An Honorary Doctorate of Economic Sciences was conferred on Hans Langh, Managing Director of Oy Langh Ship Ab, on May 14th in recognition of a long and successful entrepreneurship in the Turku economic area in a difficult field of business and as a spokesman for Finnish shipping .

Examples of the innovativeness are the tens of patented inventions of Hans Langh. Many of these inventions are related to the development of steel transportation methods. Hans Langh founded Langh Ship Cargo Solutions for marketing these methods.

 

The entrepreneurial carrier of Hans Langh started already in the age of 15, when he after the death of his grandfather took charge of the grain dryer being under construction in Alaskartano, Piikkiö. Industrial and Ship Cleaning Services Hans Langh was in year 1973 founded by him as a subsidiary trade to the farm. The company is specialized both in cleaning of vessels and in heavy cleaning jobs of the industry.

 

After Hans Langh had become familiar with shipping through the cleaning company he bought his first vessel in 1983. Today Oy Langh Ship Ab is a company with five cargo ships.

 

The farming also continues and half of the total area of the estate’s 600 hectare is field.

 

Hans Langh has, together with his wife Aila Langh, also brought both of their daughters Laura Langh-Lagerlöf and Linda Langh into the companies and have in this way reassured the future of the family companies.  

The President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen conferred in year 2008 the title of Maritime Counsellor on Hans Langh for the long-lasting and meritorious work in favour of Finnish shipping.

 

Hans Langh was in year 1986 one of the founding members of the Shipowners’ Association for smaller ships, which afterwards has been renamed to the Cargoship Association. Langh has been an active actor in favour of Finnish shipping by strongly contributing to the establishment of a register for Finnish cargo ships. Hans Langh is currently a member of the Board of the Finnish Shipowners’ Association, in which the Finnish shipping companies have joined their strengths.    

 

The Director of the Turku School of Economics Satu Lähteenmäki emphasized in the doctoral conferment of degrees, that the academic symbols and marks of rank expresses the integrity of the scientific criteria, the necessity of high moral and finally the great importance of science. The Conferrer of the ceremony, Professor Antti Paasio, gave each of the persons upon whom degrees was being conferred a doctoral hat, a diploma and a sword, with which the doctors can defend the science.

The new cradle containers of Langh Ship Cargo Solutions enable easy and secure containerisation.

 

“These containers make it possible to transport coils in ordinary cargo vessels and coils can thus be delivered profitably also, when shipments are small”, tells Product Manager Markku Yli-Kahri, who has been in charge of the container development. 

 

Hard Open Top Bulk Cradle Containers are multipurpose, even though they have been optimised for steel transportation. When handling coils the whole roof of the container can be removed. When transporting bulk the container can be loaded through the small bulk hatches  

in the roof and it can be unloaded through the letter box hatch in the back wall. 

 

“These containers significantly reduce the time used for loading coils and totally remove the need for disposable lashing material”, states Commercial Manager Laura Langh-Lagerlöf, who has invented the securing system of the coils.

 

The container can be used with flexitanks also for liquid transportations. The whole cubic can thus be exploited, while the properties of the container can take the pressure caused by liquids. The valve gear of the flexitank is easy to handle through the letter box hatch in the back wall. The payload of the container is 40 tonnes and the tare weight is 4,8 tonnes.

 

Sales Manager Mika Saarinen considers the multipurpose use of the containers as one of their assets: ”With these containers it is easy to transport raw material in the return leg, and thus they don’t need to be transported empty.”

 

 

Outokumpu’s stainless Duplex -containers are very long-lived

 

The 20’ Hard Open Top Duplex Containers are made of Outokumpu’s Duplex-steel. It has all the qualities of the above presented Bulk Cradle Container, but due to its stainless material it is stronger, lighter and the payload is as much as 50 tonnes.

 

“The life cycle of these containers will be very long, because the properties of the material are almost twofold in comparison with Corten-steel”, says David Barker from Outokumpu, “The need for maintenance is very little, the containers never need to be painted. This reduces the life cycle costs of the container.

The Langh Ship Cargo Solutions -product family includes several transportation methods, which are suitable for transportation of heavy and sensitive steel products, heavy bulk products and even for flexitank use.
